Akbulut, in his speech, particularly pointed out the difficulties, fragility, opportunities and advantages of doing business in Africa, as well as the importance of the concepts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Supra-Saharan Africa in the African geography. Akbulut, who spoke about his visits and contacts to 37 different African countries since 2009 and the experiences he gained during this process, provided important data on how the Turkish business world can do more effective and sustainable business in Africa. The critical points Fatih Akbulut pointed out included the unique characteristics of the African market, alternative business habits due to cultural differences and establishing relationships with local business partners as the key to successful initiatives.

Istanbul is the city most connected to Africa. TABA President Akbulut emphasized the ease of transportation within Africa via Istanbul for some countries and said, “Istanbul is the heart of Africa.” He underlined that it is possible to reach different parts of Africa by air in Istanbul in 3 to 11 hours, and said, “Many international companies are opening their African offices in Istanbul.” One of these examples was the China Shein Turkey Office. Interlinear Excerpts from Çiğdem Yorgancıoğlu’s Words

Speaking at the AFEX 2024 launch event to which she was invited, Çiğdem Yorgancıoğlu also drew attention to the importance of sector investments, startup/scale-up projects and university collaborations within business and investment opportunities in Africa. One of the questions she directed to TABA President Fatih Akbulut was whether they had any initiatives in this regard. World traveler and economist Çiğdem Yorgancıoğlu emphasized at the conference that she saw these initiatives taken towards Africa as cultural diversity, in addition to information security and energy investments. Another emphasis and question she had was about the impact obtained from the investments made, which could also affect social responsibility projects.

There are mutual investment opportunities in many areas from energy to agriculture, from health to banking system, and innovation. Evaluating the points that will reveal and evaluate the potential in terms of trade, culture, international welfare and peace between Turkey and Africa and addressing the strong aspects of cooperation and all initiatives on this path are extremely valuable. Yorgancıoğlu, who said that he also sees TABA and AFEX within this scope, stated that he will share his views on risks and opportunities regarding possible renewable energy projects, especially solar energy, later on, according to the flow of the meeting.

In addition to the speaker selection and questions at the event, Corporate Life, Innovation and Business World Risk Expert and Strategist Çiğdem Yorgancıoğlu met with Turkish-African Businessmen Association (TABA) President Fatih Akbulut, Egyptian African Businessmen Association President Dr. Yousri El-Sharkawi, and Egyptian African Businessmen Association member Shahab Fekry, the group’s financial and administrative advisor at this event, during and after the event break. Dr. Yousri El-Sharkawi and Yorgancıoğlu also exchanged ideas on the future vision regarding collaborations in universities and start-up projects.

Two Faces of Africa African Prejudice – That Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photo – African Boy and Vulture

In the second part of the AFEX 2024 November event, which took place after the Press Conference and coffee break on September 19, Fatih Akbulut, the President of the Turkish-African Businessmen’s Association (TABA), shared his 15 years of business experience in the African continent with his presentation titled “What Africa Taught Me in 15 Years” and called on Turkish business people to make long-term investments in Africa in his 5W1H analysis, as he put it in his presentation, and stated that permanent and sustainable success across the continent would only be possible in this way.

Aiming to provide guidance to entrepreneurs and investors in their efforts to strengthen relations with the continent, the points raised in Bulut’s presentation were a seminar topic in themselves for Yorgancıoğlu.

During this analysis, in order to draw attention to the perceived perception of Africa in Turkey, the firstslide was a photo taken by South African photographer Kevin Carter, who won the Pulitzer Prize in photography in 1994, in the arid sub-Saharan African country of Sudan. Akbulut chose this photo, that is, the black child who is about to die from weakness and the vulture perched nearby. This was a photo that Çiğdem Yorgancıoğlu mentioned in her UN speech and in her events and speeches regarding the establishment of peace and the elimination of poverty in the world, which she gave on behalf of Turkey in various continents of the world. That photo is the story of the child who became exhausted while walking to the UN camp and the vulture waiting for him to die. It was a photo that reminded the world of the famine and hunger in Africa. The photographer, who was heavily criticized for not directly helping this child who was left alone because his parents had gone to get food from the aid plane, became as much talked about in the world public opinion as the photo itself, after he became depressed and committed suicide.

Akbulut also gave the example of 20 people in the top 500 in the FORBES study on the wealth of the richest people in Africa being African, and he touched on the fact that although there are ample opportunities for agriculture in the region, especially on the Nile River, there are Africans who do not actively engage in agriculture, and that this could be a business opportunity. Another memorable line in his presentation was the words of McKinsey CEO Dominic Barton, “The future CEOs of McKinsey are somewhere in Africa.”

Sustainable Partnership was one of the memorable highlights and the importance of collaborations suitable for different profiles in Africa was also highlighted. In short, the speech pointed out the gains of trying to provide professional services by working in collaboration with local and international experts with unique and strategic partners in a wide network to deliver excellent results to the Clients.

Türkiye – Egypt and African Countries

TABA President Akbulut expressed his pleasure in working with the Egyptian side, and expressed his strong desire for the Turkish private sector community to get closer and cooperate with their counterparts in Egypt and Africa. He stated that TABA has connections within Africa and has contacts with more than 7,000 Turkish companies, and that they want to make Egypt a strong manufacturing base, and that the movement between Egypt and Turkey can yield serious results for both countries in the African and European markets. He expressed his hope that the upcoming AFEX event in November will witness momentum, rapprochement and prosperity, and that positive agreements, figures and results will be achieved between the three parties as “Türkiye – Egypt – African countries.”
