Rolls-Royce was at the Climate Change Conference with Green Technologies

Rolls-Royce is revealing its new mtu fuel cell system, which is positioned as the future carbon-free energy provider, for the first time at the UN Climate Change Conference COP26. It is planned to start mass production of the mtu solution for energy supply in the megawatt range on display as of 2025.

Rolls-Royce, which develops fuel cell systems for ships in addition to this technology it has developed, continues its preparations for an engine series that will play an important role in the use of sustainable

fuels within the scope of the “Net Zero at Power Systems” climate protection program. Under this program

The company is developing concepts for hydrogen and methanol engines, as well as decentralized Power-to-X plants. These developed concepts include the Power-to-X process, which converts green energy into storable fuel.

In addition to the fuel cell system, Rolls-Royce is also showcasing a model of its all-electric “Spirit of Innovation” aircraft in Glasgow. Previously, the company had achieved a great success for the aviation industry by bringing its “Spirit of Innovation” aircraft to the sky for the first time in September 2021. After this success, the “Spirit of Innovation”, which wants to achieve the title of the fastest all-electric aircraft in the world, is financed by the UK government as part of the “Accelerating the Electrification of Flight” (ACCEL) project. The zero-emission aircraft developed in this direction is expected to enter the record books with a target speed of 480+ KMH (300+ MPH). On the other hand, Rolls-Royce also includes exciting applications for aircraft capable of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and short-haul (commuter) aircraft with its advanced battery and propulsion technology developed specifically for this program.

Pointing out that fuel cell solutions, sustainable fuels, one of the key points of Rolls-Royce’s goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2050 at the latest, are just a few of the solutions the company has in this field, Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: says; “We believe that today’s technologies can combat climate change. We are proud to present this belief and our new technologies at the COP26 World Climate Summit. Through our work at Rolls-Royce, we play a leading role in ensuring that key elements of the global economy, including aviation, shipping and power generation, reach net zero carbon by 2050. We are focusing on our technological capabilities to further this role.” said.

During the screening and promotional activities, Rolls-Royce experts actively participate in various events at COP26.

Power Systems unit, Director of Technology Strategy Dr. Daniel Chatterjee attended the panel titled “Global Green Business Model: From Circular Business Model Design to Green Technology Solutions – Green Business Globally: From Circular Business Design to Green Technology Solutions” at 16:00 on 06 November 2021 at the EU Tent Exhibition area.

Rachael Everard, Rolls-Royce PLC Sustainability Director, spoke with Central Technology Director Dave Smith and ACCEL Program Leader Matheu Parr on net zero carbon aviation at the Climate Action Center on November 10, 2021 at 7:00 pm.
