It was announced in June that an international public tender would be launched for a solar energy project large enough to power the 2022 Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). (Bahrain Tender Board- https://www.tenderboard.gov.bh/)
It is envisaged that a grid-tied solar PV power plant with a minimum capacity of 3 MWac, with a capacity of at least 3 MWac, will be constructed using the Build Own Operate and Maintain-BOOM method. The Solar Panels will be installed as parking lot shades at BIC, with a contract term of 20 years.
In a statement from BIC, “This new project is expected to provide enough energy for the entire Formula 1 race weekend. BIC has announced Bahrain’s commitment to increase renewable energy use in the Kingdom and Formula 1’s plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030. To BIC’s plans, this will reduce the track’s carbon footprint and result in significant savings in overall energy costs.” it was said.
