Making More Use of the Sun…

At the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, over 1 GW of solar photovoltaic panels are currently operating. With a combined investment of $13.6 billion, this value is targeted to reach 5GW by 2030; thus, approximately 6.5 million tons of CO2 emissions will be saved annually.

Shuaa Energy 1, the second phase of the solar park with 200 MW, became operational in 2017. The facility uses fixed-pitch thin-film technology, has more than 2.3 million solar panels, and produces clean energy equivalent to the energy consumption of 50,000 residences in the Emirate. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is the main developer of the project led by ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia.
to the consortium and to TSK, a Spanish engineering services provider, as the main contractor.

Regarding the opening of Shuaa Energy 1, His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA MD and CEO, said: “The UAE’s interest in renewable energy generation has contributed to the reduction of its global cost to competitive levels. This contribution was made clear when DEWA broke the world record and achieved the lowest price worldwide at 5.6 cents per kilowatt hour for phase 2 of the solar park.”

GE Grid Solutions, part of global industry giant GE, brings together technologies and expertise to help solve the most intricate energy system challenges. and was selected to supply switchgear.

“Our commitment was to 220MW LV5 series liquid-cooled inverters specifically designed to serve in harsh desert conditions,” says Sedat Bacanak, Project Manager at GE Grid Solutions.

To deliver on this promise, GE chose Nynas NYTRO Taurus oil to insulate electrical equipment. Providing good oxidation stability for increased transformer life and minimal maintenance, this product has been developed for the most demanding applications.

Sedat Bacanak says, “Besides this project, which is very prestigious and important for us, we have been collaborating with Nynas for many years.” “A well-known and respected manufacturer as well as a partner with whom we can flexibly do business to meet our needs and project requirements.”

Sedat Bacanak highlights the excellent product performance as well as Nynas’ customer service and logistics capabilities as key advantages in the partnership.

“For example, there were some adverse events that created an urgent need to deliver the NYTRO Taurus to the job site. On the one hand, we had some difficulties in overcoming customs and other local transportation barriers.”

“We requested support from Nynas and as usual they were able to deliver the liquid in the form of DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) at the jobsite door. This worked for us a lot, alleviated our negativities and allowed us to deliver on time to the customer.”

As the energy sector is currently transforming towards a more diverse fuel and resource mix, the power grid needs to evolve and adapt. GE and Nynas offer crucial products for this transformation. Sedat Bacanak believes that this successful partnership will continue.

“We have used Nynas products in hundreds of our units and will continue to use them in the future,” he concludes.
