During the EURO 2020 football tournament, whose semi-finals are over, people gathered on Facebook and Instagram to check out the latest content about their favorite players and teams, connect with other fans and talk about the tournament.
So far, more than 45 million posts related to Euro 2020 have been shared on Facebook. In the tournament, where England and Italy reached the finals, England was the country fan that shared the most about Euro 2020 on Facebook platforms. While Belgium – Italy match in the quarter-finals stood out as the most talked about match on the platform, France, one of the favorites of the tournament, which was eliminated by Switzerland, became the most talked about team on Facebook platforms. Although Portugal was eliminated in the round of 16, Portugal’s captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, once again left its mark on social media. Ronaldo, who was the most talked about team captain during the tournament, once again broke the record by reaching 300 million followers on Instagram.
Wanting to help fans support their teams throughout the tournament, Facebook, together with Digital Content Producer Arno Partissimo, developed a new customizable AR filter that includes the colors and flags of each participating country team. This filter, which allows the fans to show their support for their teams before, during and after the match, attracted great attention from the fans. On Facebook, where more than 700 million people follow a sports page, more than 400 million people follow a football page. On Instagram, there are more than 400 million users who follow at least one sports account.
