Poland Not Ready for Talks on EU’s 2050 Climate Target in June

Poland, isn’t ready to resume talks with the European Union about the mid-century climate neutrality deadline during the bloc’s summit in June, according to a senior government official.

The country endorsed the carbon neutrality goal at the bloc’s last meeting in December, but was the only member state declaring that it’s not bound by the deadline because of the effort and expense required. Coal-dependent Poland needs more time to figure out its investment needs and future energy mix, according the official, who asked not to be named.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the country may lose access to a 100 billion-euro pot of EU climate transition funds if it doesn’t sign up in full in June. Poland, which needs to invest in clean power to cut the share of coal in its energy mix from current 75%, is in initial talks with Japan, France and the U.S. over potentially starting a nuclear power project, the official said.

According to previous government estimates, Poland would probably need to spend as much as $60 billion to build reactors with 9 gigawatt capacity. Poland’s government spokesman was not immediately reachable for comment by phone or message.
