The new Exynos W920 processor, introduced by Samsung, with the smallest form factor ever produced, offers high performance and efficiency in the industry.
Samsung Electronics, one of the world leaders in advanced semiconductor technology, introduced its newest processor, Exynos W920, developed for wearable devices. The new processor also breaks new ground in the industry with its advanced 5 nanometer (nm) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) processor node, providing the most powerful and efficient performance required for next-generation wearable devices.
Exynos W920 offers energy saving as well as high performance with its dual Arm® Cortex®- A55 cores. The Arm Mali™-G68 GPU, on the other hand, provides 20% better CPU performance and 10 times better graphics performance compared to its predecessor. Thanks to its improved cores and performance, Exynos W920 qHD (960×540), which enables applications to open faster, especially on wearable device screens, offers a user interface (GUI) with more interactive and eye-catching 3D graphics.
Featuring the latest features and expansions, the Exynos W920 is the smallest sized processor ever used for wearable devices with Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FO-PLP) aka “Panel Type Output Range Circuit Package”. Thanks to this technology; Exynos W920 uses power management IC (PMIC), LPDDR4 and embedded multimedia card (eMMC) in the same package with SiP-ePoP configuration. Thanks to the compact size of the processor, larger batteries can be used in smart watches or a more stylish and thinner design can be achieved.
The Always On Display (AOD) feature, which allows you to see what time it is, notifications, call history and other elements effortlessly without waking the watch from sleep, is widely preferred for wearable devices and especially smart watches. Instead of running the main CPU, the W920 processor also activates the low-power dedicated display processor Cortex-M55, reducing display power consumption in AOD mode compared to the previous Exynos model. The Exynos W920 also features the (GNSS) L1 Global Navigation Satellite System, which can track speed, distance and altitude during outdoor workouts.
The Exynos W920 processor, which also supports the new unified wearable platform created by Samsung in cooperation with Google, will be used for the first time in the Galaxy Watch model, which will be released soon.
“Smartwatches and wearables are no longer just flashy items,” said Harry Cho, Vice President of Systems LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics. Smart watches have become a part of our lifestyles so that we can stay fit, safe and up to date. Thanks to the Exynos W920 processor, the wearable devices we will develop in the future will also offer a more precise user experience while running applications with visually appealing user interfaces.” he said.
